geoskop in thallichtenberg

Opened in 1998, the Geoskop Museum of Prehistory is a branch of the Palatinate Museum at Lichtenberg Castle and runs an educational project called the Research Workshop.

The GEOSKOP displays fossilized animals and plants from the time before the dinosaurs: amphibians, reptiles, fish, and trees from the tropical fern and horsetail forests of the Permian period. Graphics bring the landscape of the ancient Palatinate to life. Animals and plants are recreated once again.

The museum has made a name for itself beyond the borders of our municipality with its discoveries of the small prehistoric lizard Remigiomontanus.
When the Kusel region was still located on the equator and characterized by tropical vegetation, this primeval lizard was native to our area.

Today, their fossils are repeatedly discovered during excavations in the quarries in Rammelsbach and Theisbergstegen and are carefully prepared in the Geoskop. Since excavations began in 2013, thousands of fossils have been discovered in the quarries and a good 100 animal and plant species have been identified. This demonstrates the great scientific significance that our region has to offer with its geological history!
The small Remigiomontanus lizard is an icon of Kusel's prehistoric past and, thanks to its great significance for the region, has even made it onto the tourist information signs at Lichtenberg Castle! But we don't want to keep the latest discovery of the crocodile-like Stenokranio boldi from you either, so we'll mention it here!
So, as you can see, there is a lot to discover in the Geoskop at Lichtenberg Castle!
